Long Elementary is Named National School of Character

Stacey Cervantes (from left), Amy Richards, Michael Jobst and Brian McKenney, principal, accept the 2009 National School of Character Award Oct. 29 in Washington, DC.

At Long Elementary School, every student is taught to feel a sense of belonging, autonomy and caring for their community and each other, and character education has played a daily role in achieving this goal for the past six years. For these leadership efforts, Long was recently recognized as a 2009 National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, DC.

Long is one of just seven schools nationwide to earn this prestigious distinction from the Character Education Partnership, which recognizes winning schools for demonstrating school transformation through low-cost, high-quality character education initiatives.

"Character education is not a program but a way of operating," said Brian McKenney, Long Elementary School principal. "It transforms how we view ourselves, how we envision education generally, and how we approach our practice. Becoming a National School of Character is a credit to our entire community — teachers, parents and students. It’s amazing when people commit to a comprehensive character initiative how it impacts every area of school life."

The transformation to becoming a School of Character includes closing the achievement gap and raising academic expectations for all students, building strong relationships and partnerships between parents, teachers, and students, and giving students opportunities to serve their communities.

"Character education is a vehicle for us to allow kids and the community to become more active partners in their own education," McKenney said.

Here ’ s what the CEP had to say about Long Elementary School: In a region and district known for strong character education programs, Long stands out as a leader. The school is held in high esteem not only by parents but also by the local community and surrounding school districts. Long teachers frequently model best practices in presentations to other schools. Through modeling, effective lesson planning, and consistency of purpose, all staff members at Long have integrated character into every corner of the school. Students learn conflict resolution and empathy through the use of "I Care Language." Through a school-wide focus on service learning, students learn to identify needs and develop projects to meet those needs.

PURCHASE an ENGRAVED BRICK for our New Amphitheater

Long Elementary is proud to announce the opening of our new outdoor amphitheater. Located at the end of the kindergarten patio, the new amphitheater will seat approximately 120 people. It can be used for school or grade level events and meetings, PTO and scout functions, and many other assemblies. We would like to thank Kopp Concrete and the Kopp family, along with Long PTO for funding this project.

We are giving the Long community, both past and present, an opportunity to purchase an engraved brick to be placed in the amphitheater. It’ s the perfect way to show your “ Long Spirit” and help fund other special projects at Long.
